This is the first December since 2008 that we have not held a protest campaign or human chain to demand an independent trial for the ruthless and brutal assassination of my father, Nurul Islam, and brother, Tamohar. We do not wish to give up our fight for justice, but we are shocked and angered by the failing of our legal system to bring our case, and thousands of cases like ours, to justice. In the past six years, the charge sheet for our case has been held back more than seven times, and my father and brother’s killers seem to have gotten off scott-free. The process has been frustrating, difficult, and demoralizing. We could not bring ourselves to organize yet another event where our voices would continue to go unheard. Yet, we are heartened that the media has stepped forward to remind us once again that we cannot and must not give up.
