This reminds me.. I was listening to a few notes I made years ago. You know that singer.. Regina Bell? She did this cover of Billie Holidays My Man. And she changed the lyrics. Instead of He isnt true; he beats me too.. what can I do..? ...etc. It was plastered all over the radio stations as, He isnt true.. he makes me blue.. Aww. Suffice it say that I dont like Regina Bell, and I dont trust the sister one bit. But thats not the point here.. Personally, I think that not only is rewriting Billie Holiday an artistic crime, abandoning and attempting to white wash, pardon the atrocious pun, of thethe experience of my mother/s and grandmother/s is, frankly, worse. Could be that Reginas mom and grandma, aunts and such arent as interesting colorful as mine, but I have a thing for integrity in music appreciation and historical (and current) context preservation. Its complicated.. as we say in social networking circles. As a feminist, I would like to revise the virtue of the gesture, for whatever its worth. Anyway.. never mind all that. Christina sang this once again, at Ettas funeral. Sometimes life makes sense..after all. :)
