This think-piece sheds a great deal of light on the various fault lines of the Middle East. The Western press views the region through an outdated Anglo-French lens. The Ottoman Turks, for example, rationally divided what we call Iraq into three provinces, Kurdish, Sunni and Shia. The British imposed a Sunni emir from the Arabian peninsula as the king of all three provinces, and it is that forlorn strategy that is now blowing up in everyone’s face. The Turkish idea of empire, like the Arab idea before them, was radically different from the Western models, which were and are essentially predatory. The United States gives all manner of highfalutin reasons for being in the Middle East, but at the end of the day it all comes down to what is good for Wall Street.
