This was the Dallas Shelter but it happens at other shelters as well. Every business has steps to make sure errors dont happen but we are dealing with lives at a shelter and just because the dogs cant speak up without getting labeled cage aggressive they are often put on the list to be euthanized. Rescues should be able to work hand and hand with shelters in this checklist process. It is too easy to euthanize and call upon a policy to cover why they were euthanized. There should never be one person evaluating a dog and certainly not ONLY animal service people. Every shelter should have a specialized dog trainer to assess a dog who is not a staff member who euthanizes animals. Volunteers are often able to reach a dog the staff labels aggressive and calm them into an adoptable animal. A shelter should not euthanize for space and but unless they work closely with rescues and volunteers they will resort to what is allowed by city ordinance, euthanizing owner surrenders, cage aggressive, animal aggressive, people aggressive, unhealthy, injured, senior, plain dogs who no one shows interest in. And please, before you go rip up a shelter staff member, remember, they are told what to do by the city officials, some of whom you have elected. Get involved at your city council meetings. Learn how to speak up for what happens in your city. Dont let stories like this one happen. nbcdfw/news/local/Dallas-Investigating-After-Rescued-Dogs-Euthanized-287602781.html?partner=nbcnews?par=nbcnews&site=nbcnews&cm_ven=nbcnews&cm_cat=Article
