This week we are pleased to feature the groundbreaking work of SSSP Member and PhD Candidate in Sociology and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan, Trevor Hoppe. His work highlights the moralistic frames the state uses to criminalize HIV/AIDS, despite medical advances that make HIV less of the “death sentence” than it once was. A key finding shows how social control does not always progress in a deterministic way from badness to sickness, but that cases can also be transformed from the locus of medical social control to legal social control.
