This weekend Ive had the great privilege of hosting my friend and martial arts inspiration Guro Ed Wong for an intensive 3 day course in his Modern Cimande Silat, a ferocious and highly functional martial art. Its incredibly rare to have the incredible combination of skill, power, generosity and teaching ability that Ed has. The lessons and material are absolutely top quality. After a full day of training Modern Cimande, he switched from teacher right into student mode and encouraged our club members to share their skills with him. This meant that we then engaged in a wing chun session taught by Sifu Corny Martens, a Muay Thai power kicking lesson from Guro Mark Jakobsen, and a quick look at my prototype seat belt sarong/ HCS anti carjacking techniques using a couple of vehicles. Its hugely inspiring and very humbling to see such open mindedness and genuine humility in action. Lastly, we then headed down to one of the many nice beaches here in the Comox Valley for an experimental water based training session where in waist/ chest deep water, Guro Ed and I explored Modern Cimande techniques where the goal was focused on drowning the opponent. In this situation, getting hammered and elbow spiked, plus neck cranks, guillotines, and arm breaks are bad enough....but then you are very easily drowned through disbalancements, knockouts and just mean assed moves that end up with you sucking a double lungfull of salt water with a busted head. A pretty cool day!
