This weeks playing tip: Safe areas Even though its found that higher handicaps score better by forgetting where the flagstick is and just shooting for the middle of the green, it is a bit boring. But by knowing how much safe area youve got around the flag, you can safely go for the glory. Some ways to help your know the safe zones: • Make mental notes of flagstick positions when passing greens yet to be played. • GPS units with hole maps can show you hazards around the green when playing a new course, and even those that dont will show you how deep the green is. • Hole notes on a courses website often say things like Dont miss left! • If you use a laser rangefinder, quickly check out the area around the flag rather than just zapping the distance to it. • Flag colors or a large ball on the flagstick can show you if theres ample room before and/or after the flag. For the important match, you may even wish to walk/drive the course before your round and take notes. The Rules do allow this, but for safety reasons it shouldnt be done while players are in the area.
