Those of you accusing of FSU of lacking sportsmanship couldnt be more wrong. While I commend the few players who stayed on the field to shake hands (including Jameis,) the reality is that what actually happens ON THE FIELD is a totally different animal. Ive worked events similar to this one in the past (though, obviously, not NEARLY on this grand of a scale). Heres how post-game/fight events work: Once the game is over, game organizers clear the field as quickly as possible. The Rose Bowl was even more expedited, because ESPN had already had to push back the kickoff time for the Sugar Bowl. So once a team wins the bowl game, the losers are asked to make their way off the field as quickly as possible. Theyre not forced off of it, but they are told to make it quick. The entire production crew has to bring the stage out, set it up, make it safe, get the dignitaries in their proper positions, and get them on the television - its all about making the bowl committees and the sponsors happy. The main question Ive been asked as a media member when prompted is why did Herbstreit put FSU on blast, then, if ESPN was the ones who got them off the field? The best answer I can give you (aside from the fact that ESPN has taken every OTHER opportunity to blast FSU, why let that perfectly good one go to waste?) is this: the talent in a case like that isnt given a blow-by-blow of what the production crew is doing or how long its going to take. The director will simply say two minutes until the toss to stage ... one minute to toss to stage ... thirty seconds ... stand-by ... toss to stage. Its up to the talent to fill that two minutes with whatever observation he or she makes. In this case, Herbstreit did the exact same thing that most of you at home did - make assumptions that fit the narrative of FSU as classless punks, instead of taking two seconds to think about why things are happening. But, of course, that wouldve wasted a perfectly good opportunity to talk crap about FSU - and we cant have that.
