Three times in the past 2 years I have seen friends post something on the order of if you are posting something in favor of/opposed to X, defriend me now. Im done talking about this. I dutifully unfriended them, not at all because I agreed or disagreed with the issue at hand, but because I believe that opposing opinions/stands are valuable in the formation of my own perspective. when discourse is met with shut the f$#@ up essentially, I find it lamentable at best and dangerous at worst. One only needs to look at the response to political opposition in Kuwait and Bahrain right now, where opposing politicians/activists are being stripped of their nationalities by their governments, leaving them essentially as citizens of no country, with no national rights at all. Go ahead and tell me where Im wrong here. I promise not to defriend you if you disagree with me.
