Throw Back Thursday, 1975 Saigon has just fallen to the North - TopicsExpress

Throw Back Thursday, 1975 Saigon has just fallen to the North Vietnamese. I am stationed on the USS Proteus AS-19, a nuclear submarine tender (repair ship for Nuclear subs) on the island of Guam. First picture is of the Proteus with nuclear submarines tied up along side, the second photo is a picture of men setting up a tent city on Orote Point a World War two Japanese air strip made from crushed coral. It was called Operation New Life, tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees were processed through that island prior to coming in to the United States. The white boy (19yo) on the far right with no shirt looking at the ground is me. The third picture is Ariel view of Orote Point air strip Guam, and you can pretty much see the entire island. It was an amazing 2 years. The history on that island is unbelievable. As a Navy diver when we would dive outside the harbor we we see countless sunken american and Japanese landing craft and ships sunk in the many battles for that little island. Not to mention that less than 3 miles outside the harbor was the Marianas Trench which to my knowledge the bottom has never been found, then we had our fly overs 2 to 3 times a week by Russian jets trying to determine which submarines were in the harbor, and the list goes on.
