Fellow skiers and boarders, my name is Tom. I live in Wellington. I’ve been a skier at Ruapehu since the late 1970’s I’m asking for your support for the community of Raetihi. You will be aware of the devastating Diesel spill from the ski field that has had a major disruptive impact on the lives and businesses of the people of Raetihi. Each year, we skiers and boarders descend on the small communities of Ohakune and Raetihi. We use the local resources, purchase their goods and services and then we depart and leave them to it. Mostly this works well enough. However, this year there has been an event that has had a major disruption to the lives of community of Raetihi. This community had no control over this event. However how this happened, why it happened is not the issue for me. I feel for the community and I would like them to know that other skiers and boarders have some feeling and support for their situation. Most of us (other than those in Christchurch) have little or no idea what it is like to not have the things we take for granted for days let alone weeks. Things like, flushing the loo, taking a shower when we feel like it, putting on the kettle or to have to walk or drive to collect water, walk or drive to have that shower etc. I am asking you to contribute what you can, to support the people of Raetihi emotionally and financially. This account is being managed solely by respected members of the local community.
