Throwback Thursday on the Havok Journal: Havok Journals - TopicsExpress

Throwback Thursday on the Havok Journal: Havok Journals managing editor, Scott Faith, caused quite a ruckus back in July when he published a story calling for the ouster of long-serving members of the Army who have never deployed. Havok Journal is re-posting Scotts original article, as well as a rebuttal by Cari Tas (see below). Who do you think is right in this issue? ////////////// Throwback Thursday: Light on the Right: Ditch Deployment Dodgers Its been a couple of months since I wrote this piece, and a lot has changed in the world. Were still deeply involved on the ground in Afghanistan, things are starting to get sporty in Iraq again, and our President just ordered 3,000 troops to Africa to fight... ebola. And yet, our benefits continue to be under attack, and our manning levels continue to be cut. And there are still those in the Army who have managed to go their entire careers without going into harms way in a theater of war. While most people seemed to agree wholeheartedly with the points I raised in the article, others strenuously objected. Much of the negative responses came from people who, unsurprisingly, were light on the right themselves, but some of it came from fellow combat vets, like the excellent rebuttal by my good friend Cari Tas posted right here on Havok Journal. I learned a lot in the aftermath of this article. For example, I now know that it is possible to receive a direct commission as an O5, and that it happens quite often in the Medical Corps. It was also pointed out that a combat patch is, in many ways, merely a merit badge; a trophy just for showing up. And I also know that people with lengthy time in service yet have never deployed get really, really upset when someone calls them out on it. So while this article might look slightly different if I were to write it today, I remain firm in my initial assertions. If a Soldier has been in the military more than 10 years and has not managed to deploy for at least 12 months, those are the peopel who should get cut first. You can read my original article, and Cari Tass rebuttal to it, at the links below.
