Time to detox the home!! Action Steps: 1. Throw away or properly dispose of home chemicals or personal hygiene products 2. Assess your environment and carefully look for possible toxicants at home and work 3. Start to de-clutter your home or living space First, any living space can harbor thousands of chemicals in new carpets and rugs, room additions, basement cracks, damp basements or crawl spaces, water leaks, gas or propane stoves, coal or wood stoves, pesticide sprays inside and outside, and paint cracks, to name just a few sources. Survey your living space to see where you might be getting exposed to toxins. How can you minimize your exposure or fix the problem(s)? One easy way to take charge of your home environment is to look at your cleaning supplies. Are they filled with toxic chemicals? Can you use natural sprays and cleaning agents like vinegar and water as alternatives? Second, clean out your personal care products. Try to minimize their use or to buy products that do not contain gluten (e.g., hydrolyzed wheat protein) or other toxins (e.g., phthalates, parabens). Third, clear out the clutter in your house as best you can. Start rummaging through old files, books, and drawers to dispose of what needs to be thrown out. Ask yourself, “what needs to be cleared from my space and what do I need to make room for?” Out with the old, in with the new!
