To talk of land rights is a challenge to feudal ownership - TopicsExpress

To talk of land rights is a challenge to feudal ownership structures of the countryside, capitalist agribusiness and draconian state-planning laws. Their impact can be summarized with the following three concerns: Level of land concentration – 3⁄4 land in Britain is owned by the wealthiest 1% of the population. We are living with a level of land concentration, i.e land is controlled by such few hands, that does not exist elsewhere in the world and never has done(with the possible exception of Tsarist Russia). Employment – 75% of Britain is farmed yet little more than 1% of the population work on the land. This is the lowest percentage of land workers in any country in the world. Impact – entrenchment of privilege and poverty. We have an entrenched culture of exclusive land ownership which has had a profound impact on social relations; i.e it maintains a privileged class and a majority disenfranchised of their right to land. It is a system enforced with planning laws and legislation. Written by Clare Joy, a London food grower and community worker organiclea.org.uk
