To the average person living in the US or another Western country, - TopicsExpress

To the average person living in the US or another Western country, these pictures are probably no big deal. It just looks like a major metropolitan airport, perhaps during a lull between flights or at 3 a.m. The cavernous hallways, the bright lights, the spacious food court, the clever decorative touches are just things you take for granted at LAX or OHare. But for the past six years, I have literally dreaded every trip to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, even when I was going home or on vacation. And I have never once NOT thought to myself, For a country with all the GIGANTICALLY untapped tourism potential that Kenya has, why does its major international airport look and feel like a Soviet-era gulag??? I mean , if you didnt have hot flashes BEFORE a trip to JKIA, two hours there would so radically lower your mood and alter your metabolism, youd wind up praying for the sweet release of death. The narrow, cramped, airless hallways, the crowded, cheerless stores, the sad little kiosks with stale samosas...UGH! But yesterday, I swear to GAWD, I could have wept during my first trip to the new JKIA. From the moment my taxi pulled up to the spanking new Terminal 1-A, where I was greeted by a mural with My President wearing a look that totally says, Pass a Bill, I knew this was going to be an amazing experience. Again, let me be clear that this note is NOT about me being happy that Kenya finally got a Western style airport. This note is about me being ECSTATIC that Kenya finally has an airport worthy of all the hundreds of incredible reasons that millions MORE people should come here every year. With all of its ssues, a trip to Kenya could easily be anybodys Trip of a Lifetime. And it shouldnt be ruined before you even leave the airport. BRAVO, Kenya Airports Authority, GoK, Uhuru Kenyatta or whoever finally used public financing to give the good people of Kenya a service worthy of their loyalty, hard work and pride in their country. I want to LIVE there, thats how nice it is....
