Today Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency, saying we are - TopicsExpress

Today Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency, saying we are facing perhaps the worst drought that California has ever seen since records (began) about 100 years ago. In his declaration, the governor called for voluntary 20% conservation of our water use statewide. Here are some tips to help you save: 1. Replace thirsty shrubs and plants with succulents and drought tolerant alternatives. 2. Install low-volume micro-irrigation for gardens, trees, and shrubs. Micro-irrigation includes drip (also known as trickle), micro-spray jets, micro-sprinklers, or bubbler irrigation. Micro-irrigation devices irrigate slowly and minimize evaporation, runoff, and overspray. Installation is cheap and easy to do. 3. Avoid watering in the middle of the day when the hot sun will evaporate much of the water before it can get to thirsty plants. 4. Fix a Leak. Small household leaks can add up to gallons of water lost every day. 5. When used as a ground cover, mulch retains moisture by reducing water evaporation from the ground and preventing runoff.
