Today I learned that the salad my father made every NYE, which he called Stuttgart Salad, is in Germany called Heringsschmaus or Heringssalat. It is a terrifying combination of ingredients, but the one that always puzzled me, was my dad adding ketchup to the mix. Today, however, that all makes sense, because the original recipe is beets, and my father was very intelligently opting out of those (I love beets, but with herring, cream, and dill pickles?!), while adding some colour and sweetness back to the salad. I would make some in his memory, but no one will share it with me, so Ill just smile and remember him making it. Miss you, Dad!
