Today, I swallowed some of my own advice medicine, and took advantage of a now gated road. As of today, many secondary roads in JNP are closed for the winter, which makes them perfect venues for some unique bike/hike combos. The Cavell Road caught my roving eye... and an idea, a plan was instantly hatched. Today’s giddy up and go requires gumption, and cold weather bike riding clothes. Ride your bike the 14km up the Cavell Road, on your favorite mount; road, cycle cross or mountain bike with the suspension locked and loaded, then a zippy little hike/run up to the Cavell meadows is a combo that I’d not done before. October outings are special; the eerie solitude of the freaky realization, ”I’m the only one in the valley” A different frozen puddle of water from the busy, busy summer months, where almost frantic , buzzing blips of humanoids dot the moraines, and beetle around in the alpine heather. Neither a peep from the pika, nor a whistle from the Marmot, greeted my eager ears, only the indignant screech and squawk from a whiskey jack, and the soft groan from The Angel, as I ascended into the crisp white, and blue black alpine greys of October. I could have been the last human on Earth, up at Mt. Edith Cavell, so hushed, so mammoth, and so tolerant. The road descent on a bike...never disappoints, zipped up tight, tucked into a compact bullet, legs spinning the cranks with delicious and delirious delight, arcing the inside line... a smile on my face, as wide as the wings of the Angel Glacier. It’s not too late; there’s still time before the snow flies and settles for good, and the Cavell Road is closed on Nov. 1 for caribou conservation, to go beyond the gate...into a truly unique realm of JNP.
