Today, Republicans in the Senate voted to block legislation that would raise the minimum wage and provide millions of hard working Americans the raise they have earned. Not only is raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour the fair and right thing to do for working class Americans, it will grow our economy by $22 billion, create 85,000 new jobs, lift between 1 and 4.5 million Americans out of poverty, and help businesses. A recent front-page story in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that stagnant incomes have created “a vicious circle that has left businesses waiting for stronger spending before they rev up hiring and investment.” By raising the minimum wage we can boost our economy and make sure no one who works full time has to raise their family in poverty.
