Today, as Im wipin down the counter after lunch, I look up and see a hummingbird outside the family room window. Hes, you know, just bein the miracle that is the hummingbird, but Im struck once again by the fact that this is my forever home. No more movin. No more searchin. I get to put down roots in a town I love and live the rest of my days in a house we can call our own. The little girl who once felt safest underneath her bed now has a great big, beautiful, messy house to redecorate with all of her secondhand treasures. She has a place to put things just so. She can paint the walls whatever color she likes (as many colors as shed like!). I dunno that this little girl will ever fully believe shes safe, but Imma spend the rest of my life makin this home the one shes always deserved. Some of you will chastise me. Youll want to remind me that home is where the heart is. I get that, but let me tell yall something right quick. You dont have to understand my longing for this particular brand of bliss to be happy for me. Just know the little girl who grew up terrified on Juniper Avenue is over here twirlin and singin in a house on Dogwood where cookies are bakin, hummingbirds are flyin, and every little thing is a miracle.
