Today has been an interesting one for me. As I go to check out at a grocery store or get some food, everyone has been wishing me a happy Fourth of July--and I cant help but cringe. For me it is not a day of celebration. We in Indian Country have to be really critical thinkers and really have a clear understanding of our position in this land. I think asking questions, such as, Are we really to celebrate the colonial entity that has so harmed our tribes? and Dont we realize we are still under a military occupation and we know so because we currently dont have a choice in the matter? can help to bring an important perspective to our collective, larger conversation. Personally, I do not celebrate this holiday for I believe my ancestors struggles, wars, and resistance to this and previous colonizers will have been for nothing. And I would hate the idea of them seeing me today, celebrating with the flag that was imposed on us and a flag that represents one of the worst genocides in this country. But, we continue to resist and I truly believe that we will outlive this nation. Happy Indigenous Resistance.
