Today (in 29 minutes in fact, at 9.27) it will exactly a year since Erica died. Lots has changed since then, lots hasnt and wont for a long time. I think you know how I feel about it all. But thats not what todays post is about. The sites called Celebrating Erica, after all. Ten things you can do today (though some may take a bit longer) to Celebrate Erica (A Preliminary List) 1. Vote early and often (advance polling starts today). 2. Better yet, browbeat someone else into voting (but for the good guys). 3. Do something to support third world development. Erica always said that when Julian was safely berthed in University (preferably abroad, so we could go on an extended visit -- lucky Julian) she would volunteer as a logistics co-ordinator with Oxfam or Medecins Sans Frontieres. She would have been fantastic. 4. Do something creative with your kid. Bake, sew, make a lego diorama. 5. Do something creative and insane for your kid (sew a costume based on a dozen youtube videos from Latvia). 6. Love your kid so much that hell be able to live without you. 7. Buy really good underwear. Put it on just because. 8. Go down to Canal Street looking for (what, another?) purse. Insist they show you the good stuff in the secret room. 9. Join a board reluctantly. Inhale that somethings not quite right smell. Pull the threads in the fabric of half truths and outright lies. Spend evenings and weekends combing through bankers boxes. Have the ED arrested and save the daycare (at least temporarily, sigh). 10. Be the best and most glamourous project manager the Toronto banking sector will ever know. Accumulate an army of clever people who really want to keep working with you. 11. Between contracts? Why not organize a community project from scratch just because you noticed something that could be better? 12. Have a notion. Pursue it relentlessly. Get it done. 13. Decide you like sailing. Buy a book. Take a course on line. Take a year off work. Go to Corfu. Get certified as a Day Skipper. Sail in a flotilla. Charter a yacht. Wander around the Mediterranean looking like this (see below) and shouting Sono io il capitano! whenever circumstances dictate. 14. Dont ever be resigned to anything. There was (almost) nothing that Erica couldnt or wouldnt overcome by the sheer force of will and the strategic deployment of binders. The only time I ever saw Erica being resigned to anything was this time last year.
