Today is Nelson Mandela Day, which is a good opportunity to examine and discuss some of his most famous quotes in the context of current events: For to be free is not merely to cast off ones chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians. --- Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organisations executive committee, who knew Mandela well, said he had internalised the Palestinian issue, it was his issue, it wasnt just a question of solidarity. It is a question of self-determination, freedom, human dignity, human rights, persistence. These are the things the two struggles have in common.
