Today is a very heartbreaking day. As I am sure most of you know, yesterday Canadians lost a hero, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, after a single gunman (I will not be using his name, he doesnt deserve to be acknowledged) shot him while he was guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The gunman then stormed the House of Commons where another hero, Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, fatally shot the man. As Canada mourns the loss of Nathan Cirillo, we have been showered with the condolences and acts of kindness from our neighbors around the world, especially our American neighbors. To all those who have joined us in our grief - thank you. It is difficult to get through these times, but our hearts are burdened a little less with all of you by our side. Canadians have one message to share, and it is simple. This act will not have us running in fear, it will not leave us looking over our shoulders. We will concede nothing to this act of terrorism. We are Canadians, strong, proud and determined. We will share our love, and our strength and we will honor two heroes in the wake of this tragedy. We will do what we do best, love each other, support each other, and together honor all of our fallen heroes. Our love and thoughts go out to Nathans family in this dark time, and as Canadians we make the commitment to ensure that Nathans baby boy will grow up knowing what a hero his father is. Kevin Vickers - our gratitude to you cannot be measured. You are a hero, and you have made Canada very proud. You faced the ultimate sacrifice, willing to give your life in place of other Canadians. You sir, exemplify the very strength, selflessness and noble hearts that our country stands for. Today is a heartbreaking day. Today is a day to mourn. Today is also a day where Canadians once again rise strong and proud together to look evil in the face and say - WE ARE NOT AFRAID. Today is a day where we honor our heroes, and a day where we share our gratitude and love. Today is a day where we thank all of the men and women that put their lives on the line every single day to keep us safe. Today is a day where we bow our heads and remember that yesterday, one man died for us, and another walked into a situation ready to die for us. Today is a day we commit to never forget, and today is a day we commit to forever stand united. Today is a day to be proud to be a Canadian.
