Today is the feast of the sixteen Blessed Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne, taken to Paris and guillotined on this day in 1794. Their crimes were "fanaticism" and "sedition" -- the latter for refusing to enter schism and accept the Civil Constitution on the Clergy. It speaks to the power of prayer that the radical fundamentalist Secularists of the French Revolution feared the prayers of sixteen nuns -- cloistered nuns at that! -- so much they had to die. It did the Revolution little good, though, as their prayers were not silenced. Pope S Pius X beatified them in 1906.
