Today marks 25 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and in remembrance of those who were lost and in solidarity with those who still struggle for their freedom, Speaker Boehner ordered a special American flag flown over the US Capitol. “Today, the most popular Chinese search engine blocks at least 19 derivations of ‘six four.’ Measure this cowardice against the courage it takes for an innocent man to pin a sign on his chest that says, ‘AIM YOUR GUNS HERE.’ Or the heart it takes for Chai Ling – a woman who saw hundreds die – to now say ‘I forgive the soldiers who stormed the square.’ They want the world to forget all this. But you cannot overcome the past by ignoring it, and so long as we stand together and never forget, the truth will always overcome the lie. It’s been said many times, many ways, but the real enemy of democracy isn’t tyranny. It is apathy. It is forgetting. The U.S. House of Representatives is committed to remembering Tiananmen Square, so we can keep alive that hunger for freedom, for the truth.” -Speaker Boehner
