Today the Minister of Women Children and Community development has stated.... On the widely reported commencement of Ops Qaseh yesterday, Rohani said she had never mentioned the initiative to have commenced on Sunday (July 7), saying efforts to get the homeless off the streets was an ongoing one. “In the first place, they shouldn’t be on the streets. They should be in homes.” Rohani also clarified that the ministry had never attempted to “raid” places the homeless were at and punish any of them. Here are your previous statements to the media Minister. They prove that what you said today is incorrect....... June 11, 2014 The government has declared “war” on the homeless found on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Starting early next month, enforcement agencies will “sweep” the streets clean of all such people. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim said her ministry would be working closely with enforcement agencies to carry out the “sweeping” operation in early July. “The agencies working together with us include Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police. “This will be a continued effort from our last exercise of taking people off the streets. This is for the protection of these people and not to just plainly ‘chase’ them away.” The homeless will be taken to national rehabilitation centres under the Welfare Department for assessment and rehabilitation. They will stay for a minimum of one month before they are returned to their homes or sent to relevant institutions. At the moment, four centres have been set up in Sungai Buloh, Jerantut, Mersing and Kota Kinabalu. On whether the enforcement will be taken to the next level in terms of enactment, Rohani said that it depends on how the exercise goes. “The discovery of those (homeless people) taking advantage of the generosity of donors has strengthened my will to take everyone off the streets because they shouldn’t be there. 7 July 2014 The crackdown on the homeless, through Ops Qaseh, would be done to place the homeless in shelters and welfare homes. It was reported that Ops Qaseh would be carried out in the city centre from this month, but Rohani refused to divulge specific details, for fear that the homeless would hide. This is different with the Anjung Singgah concept, where the homeless were given shelter for about two weeks only and were also given counselling, food and job opportunities. If they are left to their own devices, it would be dangerous, but to institutionalise them is the last resort, Rohani added. July 7, 2014. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said today tourists were taking advantage of the soup kitchens meant for the homeless and that everyone had misunderstood what her colleague Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor had said when he told the charities to shut their activities by today. Sometimes, tourists too, line up (to get food) because they dont know. They think Malaysia is so generous in giving food to everyone. July 7th 2014 The Women, Family and Community Development minister said that the feeding of the poor and the homeless by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has attracted the attention of others who have taken advantage of the situation to get free food. July 3: Rohani said her ministry was in the midst of planning to launch Ops Qaseh in KL, George Town, Penang, Johor Bahru, Johor and Kuching, Sarawak, “as we are made to understand that there are 1,646 homeless people in these areas”. She said the “rescue operation” would be a collaborative effort by the ministry, JKM and non-governmental organisations to tackle the rise in the number of homeless cases. The operation, which is scheduled to be launched in a few days, will include counselling services, job procurement services, training as well as motivational programmes for the homeless. 2nd July 2014 At least four hotspots for beggars and the homeless in Kuala Lumpur will be targeted by the authorities under Ops Qaseh, a large-scale operation to get the homeless into shelters and crack down on begging syndicates. Ops Qaseh, to be launched next week, is set to begin around Jalan Imbi, Masjid India, Central Market and the National Mosque, said the Welfare Department. “From our previous operations on the homeless community, we deduced that most of them gathered in these areas. “We are still in discussions with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry on a final list of locations to search but the operation will begin during the fasting month,” said a department official.
