Today, there are about 10 percent of Singaporeans who earn less than $1,000. But in the latest Household Expenditure Survey, it was shown also that the poorest 10 percent of Singaporeans have to spend nearly 180 percent of their incomes. ... another study by National University of Singapore economist Tilak Abeysinghe showed that 30 percent of Singapore households have to spend between 105 percent to 151 percent of their incomes, which means that not only do the lowest-income families have difficulty making ends meet, even lower-middle income families face hardship as well. As such, not only will $1,000 mean that it is difficult for Singaporeans to survive on, let alone buy a flat, it is also difficult for the poorest 30 percent in Singapore. Today, 30 percent of Singaporeans earn less than $2,000 every month.
