Today were in New Richmond with deisgner Cheryl Stegman comparing before and after photos of a ktichen remodel project. One of the biggest complaints about kitchen design is the lack of countertops. Your kitchen and countertops should look great, but everything has to be functional and flow. Make sure you have enough countertop workspace by thinking about how you use your countertops now and plan for future needs. The amount of space you need will be specific to how you actually use your kitchen and decisions will be impacted by size limitations of the room and your budget. In the project below, the image on the left with the dark appliances demonstrates how you have to evaluate the traffic flow through the kitchen and organize countertop space so that it will be efficient and comfortable. Make a list of the types of activities for which you need countertop area and decide how they might overlap when more than one person uses the kitchen. In this project, we ended up with a clean, uncluttered pattern of traffic that the homeowners will enjoy for years to come. More on this project in later features.
