Todays coal fired steam locomotive is the Norfolk & Western #475. This 4-8-0 type engine was built in 1906 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Norfolk & Western Railroad as one of their M class locomotives. The engine operated on the Norfolk & Western until the railroad ended steam operations in the late 1950s. The engine was then placed on static display in Bristol, Virginia. The locomotive got a chance at a second life when the Strasburg Railroad in Strasburg, Pennsylvania purchased the engine and restored it to operating condition. The 475 began operating on the Strasburg Railroad in 1993, for excursion service. Today the engine continues to operate at Strasburg and is the only operating 4-8-0 in the United States!
