Todays e-list update. (Let us know if youre not yet on our mailing list, and would like to be included - the hyperlinks dont come through but are in the comments below:) Dear friend of the forest, Were set for another massive summer and we hope that youre going to join us in defending and protecting some of the south-wests most precious and important forests from logging. It beggars belief, but the Forest Products Commission is about to start logging in Helms forest and Mowen forest in the coming days. Helms is the release site for endangered black cockatoos. It is on the border of the Jamarri Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre, near Nannup, and provides the critical food and nesting habitat that these magnificent birds need to survive. Helms is an oasis of high quality cockatoo habitat in an area that has been intensively logged and burned in recent years. The managers of Jamarri fear that there will be local extinctions of Red-tailed, Carnabys and Baudins Cockatoos if Helms is logged. We need everyone on board to defend this ancient jarrah and marri forest and the cockatoos and other wildlife that depend on it. We are meeting there this Sunday at 1pm, and will keep you updated on what other steps you can take in coming days. In 2012 we successfully protected 209 hectares of the 500 hectares FPC wanted to log then, but now we are needed for the remaining 281 hectares on the chopping block. Mowen Forest is 25kms out of Margaret River and is being vigorously defended by the local community. Last week the Augusta Margaret River Shire voted 6-1 to support the communitys 1600 strong petition to protect Mowen. Despite this, and calls for logging to be postponed at least until a Parliamentary inquiry can be conducted, loggers are due to move in next week. The Margaret River community is going to need our support to defend Mowen Forest. Please sign their petition here Last summer WAFA was proud to support the campaign to protect Challar forest and so far so good there. As always, WAFA would love to hear from you and we have a number of volunteering opportunities. Please get in touch by replying to this email or calling me on the number below. And if you are able to make a donation to help us with the campaign, no amount is too small and every donation is greatly appreciated. You can donate by following this link. With much appreciation for your support for our forests, Jess Beckerling WA Forest Alliance 0488 777 592
