Todays weather forecast is a good reminder to start hydrating for practice next week. If you dont already have an insulated water cooler go out and find one this weekend. Look for one with a twist-off lid, for filling with ice, a durable handle, and a pour spout is handy to get the water where it needs to go. A half-gallon size water cooler is a good size for for younger players. Older age divisions may need a larger size. If you cant pick-up a cooler right away, a clean gallon size plastic milk container will provide ample water to get through a practice. If you want to monitor the water lost through perspiration during a practice, weigh your athlete before practice and then again after practice. This will give you a good idea as to how well your athlete is hydrating. Proper hydration can not only prevent heat related illness, but also prevent other injuries, including concussions. Heres another tip: Freeze a large plastic cup of water. When its time for practice, remove the ice from the cup and place it in the cooler, then top off with water. The ice will keep the water cool all through the hottest practice or game. Dont forget to refill the cup and put it back in the freezer for the next day.
