Tonight: Come Learn About ‘Free Gut,’ Christiansted as a part of the National Park Service-St. Croix 2013 Lecture Series (Free!) Featuring a panel discussion between Dr. Elizabeth Rezende, Ms. V. Celeste Fahie, and Ranger Benito Vegas about their research and programs on Free Gut. This neighborhood was established at the onset of Danish Colonial rule on St. Croix as a place where frikulorte -- ’free colored’ -- could own property and live. These three presenters will discuss the developments that made this neighborhood an incubator for social, political, and economic change in Christiansted, the Virgin Islands, and the Americas from 1747-Present. Attendees can preview the new exhibit posters on Christiansted’s neighborhoods after the talk. The lecture will be held from 5:30-6:30 PM in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be ‘free’ and opened at 4:45 PM and closed at 7PM for this event.
