Tonights City Council meeting will be one of the most important meetings weve had since the election in April this year. First during the 6:00pm Committee of the Whole well hear an update on the Elgin Business License or EBL. This program/tax has been in effect for nearly 3 years & has been a problem for the staff to administer from the start. For a variety of reasons I decided to campaign for repeal of this unpopular program/tax on all Elgin businesses. So tonight I plan on making a motion to Repeal the EBL in its entirety. Hopefully my fellow council members will agree & it will be a victory for hard working business owners both big & small. So come out & watch history being made or follow live stream coverage on the City of Elgins web site. Second big issue tonight will come up during the regular Council meeting at 7:00pm, the consideration of a Zoning change & a new housing project at 120 S. State St. by the Elgin Housing Authority or EHA. After thorough examination of this proposed project I strongly support rejecting or at least tabling this for revision by the petitioners, EHA. This project has many flaws, including multiple deviations to our Zoning standards from set backs off Rt. 31, too much density for the lot size, over sized signage & increased traffic problems in an area already dealing with traffic head aches. Added to this is local citizens in this neighborhood are against this proposal. Hopefully the majority of the city council will either reject or table this important issue tonight.
