Tonights Critical Listening: Pauls Boutique Today, at the age - TopicsExpress

Tonights Critical Listening: Pauls Boutique Today, at the age of 40, I bought my first Beastie Boys recording on ANY format. I didnt really realize it at the time, but it is true. I think I had all of their CDs from their debut to Hello Nasty, but they had all been either left behind in apartments or gifts (Hello Nasty was a Christmas present.) I liked them for sure, but didnt love them like everyone else seemed to. All my roommates from 1993 to 1996 or so seemed to play them a lot, so I got to know them pretty well. Pauls Boutique holds up remarkably well. While I love the organs on Check Your Head a great deal - along with the general move towards playing instruments - this one is my favorite. At the time, I had a suspicion how insane this achievement was, especially after trying to mix sound collages in the analog era. To get this sort of stuff (IN TIME at that) in 1989 is a tremendous technical achievement. Bonus points for introducing me to SuperFly! Downsides: For such a classic album, it has a few stinkers - Sounds of Science and 3 Minute Rule have always dragged to me.
