Treachery of those with positions of any authority is greater than the treachery committed by the layperson. Thus the politician who remains silent on the injustice and plots of the enemies of Allah, or the imam of the masjid who speaks of topics out of context with the serious realities of the Ummah, or the scholar who does not verbally attack the wrongs of the oppressor, these will be amongst the greatest of traitors in the sight of Allah. If any Muslim takes on the task of leading any people, let him know that being weak of character with inability to remain steadfast and speak clearly might earn one the position of a traitor. Whether it is by promoting the evildoers, or by speaking out of context about them, or by remaining silent about them, then remember the hadith of the prophet peace be upon him said: Every traitor will have a flag on the Day of Judgement to identify them according to the amount of their treachery; there is no traitor of greater treachery than the leader of the people.
