Trials in older menopausal women have shown that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the new KEEPS trial in younger menopausal women (aged 45 to 54 years) has found that four years of MHT (combining a progesterone and a low dose of an oral or skin-applied estrogen) relieved symptoms of menopause, improved some blood tests associated with heart disease (such as cholesterol), and did not affect indirect measurements of atherosclerosis.
