Tropical Storm Jerry is barely crawling in the Central Atlantic - TopicsExpress

Tropical Storm Jerry is barely crawling in the Central Atlantic but poses no threat to land. Meanwhile, a low pressure in the Caribbean could become a rainmaker along the Gulf Coast this weekend. As of 11 p.m. AST (EDT), Tropical Storm Jerry was located near 28.1 N and 43.7 W, or 1,180 miles west-southwest of the Azores and 1,290 miles east of Bermuda. This also puts it about 2,070 miles east-southeast of Wilmington, N.C. Its maximum sustained winds have weakened to 40 mph as it crawls west at 1 mph. Jerry`s minimum central pressure is 1008 mb, or 29.77 inches of mercury. Shower and thunderstorm activity with Jerry has decreased as potent upper-level winds have led to some weakening of the storm. It will slowly move into cooler water and then accelerate to the northeast ahead of a low pressure that will move in from the west. Jerry will only remain a threat to shipping lanes. Besides Jerry, a low pressure in the northwestern Caribbean is trying to become organized. The problem is upper-level winds are moderately strong, so formation of a tropical depression is not imminent. The low will move into the southern Gulf of Mexico, likely producing heavy rain in Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands during the midweek. Residents along the Gulf Coast are urged to monitor its progress as an incoming cold front this weekend could help push the low towards the eastern Gulf Coast. This would bring downpours to southern Mississippi and Alabama as well as Florida`s Panhandle. September typically sees three storms on average. September 2013 was no different, with three named storms, including two hurricanes, Ingrid and Humberto. By the end of the season`s fourth month, the "average" season has seen seven named tropical storms, four hurricanes, and two major hurricanes. So, while the season has been above average in terms of quantity of named storms, it has been slow for hurricane development. There also have not been any major hurricanes yet.
