Tshpointoh Farrell asked me to name 15 albums that have had an influence on me at some point or another in my life in a major way. James Ficklin Challenged me for 15 movies so ill do them all together in one thing. Albums: (In no particular order, except the first one) -Omar Rodriguez Lopez This is technically cheating but really he has as a composer, influenced me more than any other single person ever has a musician. Hes never been afraid to take risks even when they didnt work out. Intuitive, creative, emotional, spontaneous, aggressive. Every note that comes out of his instrument i feel is true to who he is as a person. From the noodling in Cassandra Gemini to the constant stream of solo albums, he is someone who has tried every step of the way to find truth in his compositions, wherever it may be. -Earth : The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull. -This album taught me how to be patient, and to let music expand and breathe organically. -Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven - Masterpiece album. Can only truly be appreciated with your headphones on in a dark room listened to in its entirety. Great example of making beautiful music with sheer force of will and determination vs virtuosity. - John Coltrane: A Love Supreme - Work of beauty. An example of 4 musicians who played as one. Elvin Jones said that he felt that he was Inside Johns head when they were recording. That type of in tune-ness is evident to anyone who listens to the album. -The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Axis Bold as Love- Psychedelic Bliss. 1983- A Merman I shall Be is a personal favorite. -Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works Vol. II - Autechre- Exai -Les Rhinocéros- Les Rhinoceros I - Mahavishnu Orchestra- Birds of Fire - Meshuggah- Obzen -Mastodon- Blood Mountain - John Zorn- Electric Masade: At the Mountains of Madness - Charles Mingus- The Essential Charles Mingus: The Colombia years. -Flying Lotus- Cosmogramma -Endangered Blood- Self Titled. (that was super hard but these were what popped into my head, another day i may have answered differently but these all have had profound influences on how i interpret, think about, and play music.)
