Tufted Carpet Basics Tufted carpet is the primary carpet construction method as more than 93% of all carpet is tufted. The rest of the market is almost equally divided between either woven/knitted or needle punched and fusion bonded. The benefits of tufted carpet cannot be understated as it provides textural flexibility, along with a wide variety of styles and constructions that are computer controlled to make a consistent, quality product. The carpet is made with three main actions. The first is the warp, the yarn going longitudinally, and the second is the weft, yarn being woven perpendicular to the warp and, finally, the heddle, which are the vertical wires that control the warp yarns. Then there are two different processes that determine a carpet’s style. The first is the Axminster that can make carpet with a seemingly unlimited combination of colors and designs and manufactures carpet between 15-27 feet wide. The alternate process is the Wilton that provides a faster face-to-face construction and makes cut, loop and cut loop pile carpet. The Wilton does offer less variety of color, but can easily create a number of different patterns and sizes. The carpet’s structure is another important facet of broadloom carpet. The three styles are loop, cut pile and cut and loop pile. In loop carpet, the surface is composed of uncut loops. Cut pile’s surface is created by cutting the loops of yarn. Cut and loop is obviously a combination of the two previous and is made by alternating between the two processes during manufacturing. The market for broadloom is as diverse as its designs. The current market for broadloom is split up into commercial contract, which makes up 32% of the market, and residential, which makes up the remaining 68%. The diversity of the market comes from the uses broadloom finds in Corporate (38%), Hospitality (11%), Healthcare (17%), Education (13%), Retail (10%), and Gov’t (11%). CRIBlog.org
