Twas the annual memorial gig for Judge Trev Thoms of Inner City - TopicsExpress

Twas the annual memorial gig for Judge Trev Thoms of Inner City Unit last night - at Hoves Brunswick pub and what a celebration, not only of the great man and his work but good old fashioned space rock in general. There were times when the swirling synths and wailing saxophone (c/o Thunder-rider Nik Turner) created such a cosmic cacophony that youdve be excused for thinking Simon Cowell had never in fact existed - and the scumbag was actually just some bad dream that with just a couple more freaked out space jams will eff off forever and leave us all alone. During the evening I bumped into some chap at the bar who knew Mott The Hooples Pete Watts from car boot sales in Hereford... apparently buying stock for an antiques shop - anyway, he said the bassist had a high opinion of the Damned... which is nice as we loved Mott too. Actually Mr Vanian squatted at Petes flat for a while when first in London and it was there that we all went for drinks after our singers wedding - in 77 I think it was (its all a blur!). Mind you I DO recall helping sabotage the honeymoon car with rattling stones in hubcaps, shaving foam on windows and dog poo in the heater. It mustve been an appalling moment as they drove along and turned on the AC!! But back to the present though - and Inner City Unit who, while theyll never be the same without Trevs playing & enthusiasm last night performed some of my fave tunes from their 3 excellent albums - of which Maximum Effect features some guitar twanging from yours truly. Its a great album too despite that, containing some cracking songs - in particular Were Gonna Raise The Bones Of Elvis which Trev, Nik and the band play 51 mins into the following live video recorded in 2011. They certainly dont write songs like THAT anymore. PS - I nearly got up and sang but had learned a tune that wasnt on the bloody setlist - that didnt stop me muscling in on the band photo afterwards though... John Terry style. Tsk! PPS - Although Trevs sadly not with us any more Brightons Real Music Club that he helped organise very much IS, and it still lives up to its name promoting interesting, psych tinged performances that are a much needed breath of fresh air in the current turgid musical climate! therealmusicclub youtu.be/OYhgjSp6xjI
