Two days ago, Grandma (95yo) didnt bat an eye upon sharing that the two men who moved into an assisted living unit above her have lived together 52 years, as she shared the German gingerbread they gave her for Christmas. Yesterday, after a lengthy talk about race and privilege, in which I used my own experiences with not-overly overt and mostly non-violent expressions of racist behaviors directed at me, even in the presence of my (white) parents, my mom decided to wear a dark red dress to dinner, because it matched my own dark red dress, so that we would look like mother and daughter. These are gestures that, while small, are nonetheless coming from complicated, difficult places of confusion and revisioning for the elder Gaudry women. Im proud of them. Heres to 2015.
