Two weeks ago I had surgery on my foot and an Achilles tendon lengthened. For those of you who have been around the church you have seen me scooting around from place to place. I’m grateful for these new inventions that make life easier and allow us to move forward. It is that way with our spiritual lives as well. We need sometimes to make use of things that help us to heal and to grow in our journey of faith. I wouldn’t say these are crutches but rather aids to help us deepen our faith. Learning a new way to pray or a different way to study scripture for example. Meet-ing with a small group to help us learn these and to hold us accountable is an excel-lent aid in developing our Christian faith. Some find it helpful to meet with a spiritual director or companion who guides us in our faith journey. We have been using some of these spiritual practices such as the prayer groups and the lectio divina (scripture readings) both in small groups and the in the visioning discernment process. One of the points you identified in the vision you want to grow into is “transforming lives through spiritual practices.” If there is enough interest I will be leading a prayer re-treat where we will explore the labyrinth—an ancient walking prayer path. (see arti-cle on prayer retreat) This fall you will be able to be part of small groups that will explore the Story of God contained in the Bible. You will hear more about that soon. Our spiritual walk with God just doesn’t happen. We need to find those things that will aid us in our spiritual growth. Come gather together this Sunday for worship– a spiritual practice that greatly aids us in our faith journey.
