U.S. Athlete, Conner Felstead, who is coached back home by Spencer - TopicsExpress

U.S. Athlete, Conner Felstead, who is coached back home by Spencer Arnold, was performing these in training here in Russia. In my opinion he was performing them perfectly. I’ve heard several different names for this exercise; the most common is “Hip Snatch.” I prefer not to call it Hip Snatch but either a Dip Snatch or Power Position Snatch. The reason I shy away from the term “hip” is because athletes, especially newer ones, tend to overshoot the hips causing the bar to loop out and around the body. For me, it’s less about hips and more about legs. I prefer my athletes focus on verticality and keep the bar close to the torso, following the chest as it is elevated into the Snatch position. The key is to keep the shoulders above or behind the barbell in the set up. If the shoulders go in front of the bar, even by a bit, it becomes a “Hang” and that’s not quite what we’re trying to accomplish in this drill. This is a great exercise to develop vertical hip & leg drive, as well as bar control.
