UNFPA Press Release Foreign Minister of Bangladesh meets with the UNFPA Country Representative Bangladesh Dr. Dipu Moni, Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed Ms. Argentina Matavel Piccin as the new UNFPA Representative in Bangladesh and said that UNFPA has been a long-standing partner and friend of Bangladesh. On 29th August 2013, the newly-assigned Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Bangladesh, Ms. Argentina Matavel Piccin presented her letter of credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dipu Moni. The ceremony took place at the conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was attended by the senior officials in the Ministry. Ms. Piccin conveyed UNFPA Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin’s greetings to Bangladesh Government and mentioned that Bangladesh is still the priority country to continue support for the implementation of ICPD agenda beyond 2014. Ms. Piccin expressed appreciation to the Government of Bangladesh for allowing her to contribute to the country’s development process and vowed to exert all her effort to this goal. Dr. Dipu Moni said UNFPA is an excellent development partner to the Bangladesh Government and ICPD is a priority agenda for the country. Bangladesh Government focuses on population development issues, women and reproductive health issues on priority basis. She further mentioned that involving youth we can change our society for prevention of child marriage, early pregnancy. She also said that the current Government has taken strong initiatives on women empowerment in Bangladesh. Ms. Piccin said UNFPA will continue to intensify efforts, focusing on promoting family planning in the context of SRH and reproductive rights, especially looking at the needs of young people and women. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dipu Moni congratulated Ms. Argentina Matavel Piccin on his new appointment and wished her of a successful stay in the country to contribute meaningfully to the development of Bangladesh, particularly in the implementation nof ICPD agenda beyond 2014.
