UPDATE ON OUR HORSE TRAINER: Mike talked to Gene last weekend and found out more about what happened, how he is and what the future holds. Gene had rode my little mare that morning, He said she did great, like a light bulb had clicked on and she was putting everything together that he was teaching her. He said she was a really nice horse. His 87 year old neighbor rode over on his horse and Gene decided to ride his horse with him. Somehow with the distraction, when he saddles his horse, which is considerably larger than mine, he did not let his back girth out to fit his horse. The horse bucked him off once and then the next time was when the horse really turned it on and Gene got hurt. He had been working with this horse for a while and he had never offered to buck while he has riding him, so he knew there had to be and explanation for what happened. He went to the emergency room twice that day. Once before we got there and once after we left there. The first doctor told him that his shoulder was fractured and that he had broke 2-3 ribs. He went back because he was having a really hard time breathing. During his 2nd trip, he was transported to Harris in Fort Worth. They checked him out much further and determined that his shoulder was separated, not fractured and that he had 8 broken ribs, 5 on one side and 3 the other. And the reason he was having such a hard time breathing was because blood was pooling in his lungs. The doctor told him that he could do surgery on his shoulder, but if he hurt it bad again that they would be unable to repair it a second time. He seemed to think that it would heal okay on its own and he could get 80-90% function back as it is. And thats the plan he has decided to go with. With all of that said, he told Mike that he had no intention to stop training horses. And that next spring when he would start back training, he would like us to bring my bay filly back. And he wants to give us the first 30 days free for being such good friends to them. Mike declined but Gene has insisted. So, we decided that when we take her back over there, we are going to leave her for 90 days and this will give her such a great foundation and help re-enforce all of her training to aid us in keeping her going,. We plan a trip over to visit them in the near future when he feels a little more like having some company.
