UPDF Officers Must Be Tried Over LRA War – Okumu By: Our Reporter Reagan Okumu, the chairperson of the Acholi parliamentary groups wants Uganda People’s Defense Forces- UPDF officers investigated for possible crimes they might have committed during the Lord’s Resistance Army way in Northern Uganda. He says the UPDF operation was characterized with brutality. UPDF operation was a counter insurgency operation executed by UPDF in 1991 to flush out the rebels. He singled out renegade General David Ssejusa, the former coordinator of intelligence services, who was the overall commander of Operation North. According to Okumu, during the operation, General Ssejusa cut off northern Uganda from the rest of the country and committed brutal crimes like burying people alive. He opposition politician said he has seen some people walking around the country seeking to get leadership yet they have blood on their hands. Okumu said General Ssejusa is currently parading himself as a free man. He said fortunately Ssejusa recently disclosed to the country how they rigged the polls and urged him to explain how they planned and executed operation north. Aswa County legislator Reagan Okumu Okumu said besides Ssejusa, president Museveni who sanctioned operation north as commander in-chief is accountable for the atrocities committed during the war. Okumu’s comments come only a few days after Maj Gen Dominic Ongwen, one of the indicated LRA commanders was transferred to the International Criminal court following his surrender to US troops in Central African Republic. According to Okumu, Ongwen’s forthcoming trial in the ICC is a blessing in disguise because it will mark the beginning of truth telling on how Children in Northern Uganda have suffered. Ongwen faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
