UPWC, NCCT to meet before Dec 25 The government-supported Union Peacemaking Working Committee and the minority-led Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team will hold a two-day meeting in Yangon before December 25 to discuss the continuation of nationwide ceasefire talks, reports say. The meeting will be attended by UPWC Vice-chairman and Union Minister Aung Min and leaders of NCCT, which represents several ethnic armed groups. The decision to hold the meeting comes after progress was made during talks between UPWC’s technical team and NCCT leaders. NCCT leaders Naing Han Tha, Pado Saw Kwe Htoo Win and Major-General Gwan Maw met with the UPWC technical team in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday. Controversy arose during the sixth formal meeting between the two organisations in September over the issue of conducting a political dialogue between the government and ethnic armed groups. “The peace process has ups and downs. But we have to try to reach the goal. I think it is good for them to meet Minister U Aung Min,” said Hla Maung Shwe from the UPWC’s technical team. “The meeting is likely to happen between December 20 and 25. They said in a message that they want to meet with the minister for two days.”
