URGENT - SAVE THE GREMLIN! This is an urgent plea for help to save a rare wartime artefact that has remained hidden for over 70 years in the village of Crossways - formerly RAF Warmwell - in Dorset. The local village shop ‘Tree Stores’ has been sold and is very shortly going to be subjected to extensive building work to convert it to a Co-op supermarket. During World War 2 however this very same building was a YMCA hostel for the airbase and in 1942 a talented young pilot painted a cartoon mural on the wall of the hostel of the ‘Gremlin’, a motif which also adorned the nose of his Westland Whirlwind fighter plane. This mural has been preserved by successive owners of the building since that day, but now faces total destruction as the builders prepare to move in after the shop closes on Friday 9th January. They say they will do what they can to save it but cannot guarantee success. Crossways Parish Council have stated that if it can be saved then they can very likely house it in the village hall – formerly the base NAAFI and Gymnasium- but do not have the expertise required to remove, preserve and mount it. Help the village to save this historic icon! If anyone out there has any experience in these matters, or knows of anyone who might be able to help then please get in touch with the parish council straight away. The chairman, Mr Andrew Brewer, can be contacted via their email address - [email protected] . The more people who know about this the better so PLEASE share. Also, the more people who voice their concern, the more likely positive action will follow. If you think our local media can help then PLEASE let them know: Dorset Echo: [email protected] Blackmore Vale: [email protected] Wham Advertiser: [email protected] Thank you...
