Ultimate game of find the needle in a haystack. A Jaguar X-type - TopicsExpress

Ultimate game of find the needle in a haystack. A Jaguar X-type was towed in as a no start and kept blowing the main ignition switch fuse. The back story on it is just disturbing, he had taken it to a shop in North Carolina they had replaced the alternator and sent him on his way. After leaving to head to a job in Louisiana just after two hours into the drive the car died again. The shop towed the car back and supposedly repaired it again. He had no problems for awhile until coming to Pa for a job and thats when we had became a part of the story. I had verified that the main fuse F26 had blown and melted the fuse box because the other shop had installed a 50 amp fuse where a 15 amp is required! I tested that circuit and found it had a dead short, so this is where the fun begins. OEM wiring schematics do not show you a road map on which harnesses a particular wire may go though just what color(s) and where it ends up at. At this point I had to start pulling and opening the under hood and dash wiring harnesses to follow that circuit. After finding the circuit from the main fuse to the ignition switch was ok I need to find out which circuit was shorted off the ignition switch. And find out I did, right at the switch after I removed the conduit the circuit for the accessory power on was melted and blistered. Following that wire, needing to remove the steering column, instrument cluster and more harness, I had finally found the short. Where the main cabin wiring harness crosses the dash support cross member the accessory on wire had rubbed through the brake pedal support bracket. I replaced the blistered wire, added extra protection to the sharp bracket to prevent re occurrence, repaired the main fuse box, installed the proper amperage fuse to F26, installed missing relays that was removed by the other shop and reinstalled the main fuse box that had been tampered with before. All I can say to to prevent a potential fire is to NEVER install a larger fuse thats called for.
